Being Helpful

For ringers, as for normal folk (I’m sure you follow my drift), there are two kinds of helpfulness.  The first is when help is not actually asked for – this is also known as interfering.  Ringing gives many excellent opportunities for this, as any practice night will confirm.  Picture the scene – you have played through the piece you have been learning for the last few weeks, and yet again you have managed to play it quite well except for those four pesky bars right in the middle.  So She Who Must Be Obeyed says “Let’s just go back to Bar 36 and get these few bars properly sorted.”

In The Unlikely Event...

In bellringing, little local difficulties can occur from time to time.  You'll recognise them when you come across them - you're playing a piece for the umpteenth time and all of a sudden, out of the blue, comes a truly horrendous racket where the tune should be (known technically as a Wonky Bit).  Now we all know that ringing is about teamwork, but the motto of ringers everywhere should be 'All for One, and Me for Myself', so the important thing, when these occasions arise, is to go into self-preservation mode - fast.  Here is AKR's 7 - Point Plan for Coping with Unlikely Events.  You may care to commit it to memory, so that you're well prepared when the inevitable happens.

Satnav for Ringers

A Dream Come True?

A wonderful side-effect of satellite navigation (satnav) in cars is that it provides living proof of one of the most remarkable characteristics of the human male – whilst (obviously) they will not do anything they are told to by a woman, if a machine tells them to do something they obey it without question. I imagine we have all heard those horror stories about satnav systems sending (male) drivers through a five-bar gate on to a narrow track running across the side of a mountain, with a 300 foot drop on one side. Can you imagine the man’s reaction if a female passenger, holding a map, had suggested this route? But because they are told by a machine to use it, they hop out of the car like little lambs and open the gate.

Kinder Ringers - Out of the Blue!

One or two people seem to have noticed that Kinder have recently changed their uniform, from “cool blue” to - well, its official name is “Geometric Russet”, but we prefer to think of it as “Vivid & Vibrant” - just like us! The change was the end of a long and painful process ……
